This year, Dr. Roy Hajjar was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal, recognizing the excellence of his academic journey.

Currently completing a colorectal surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, he will return to practice at the CHUM in 2025, where he completed his residency.

In recent years, he has distinguished himself through his research on colorectal cancer, conducted with Dr. Carole Richard and immunologist Manuela Santos, both researchers at the CHUM Research Centre.

In a study published in Gut, their team demonstrated in mice that modifying the gut flora before surgery could reduce postoperative complications in patients with colorectal cancer.

Their research also identified two bacterial strains that directly influence the occurrence of anastomotic leaks, commonly known as intestinal leaks.

With a PhD in biomedical sciences, specializing in experimental medicine, Dr. Hajjar was also awarded the Scientific Outreach Scholarship and the Graduate Merit Scholarship in 2024, both granted by the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal.
